Grand Rounds: Endometriosis Typology and Ovarian Cancer Risk
Learning outcomes
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:
- Differentiate superficial peritoneal endometriosis, ovarian endometriomas, and deep infiltrating endometriosis, and describe their associations with ovarian cancer risk.
- Interpret findings from the Utah Population Database cohort study on endometriosis subtypes and ovarian cancer histotypes,
recognizing the limitations of observational evidence. - Describe how clinical symptoms and imaging may support earlier recognition of endometriosis and reduce diagnostic delay.
- Discuss the potential implications of subtype-specific risk findings for patient counseling and shared decision-making, considering fertility goals, long-term health, and remaining evidence gaps.

Meet the speaker
Karen C. Schliep, PhD, MSPH
Department of Family Medicine and Public Health, University of Utah
Karen C. Schliep, PhD, MSPH is an Associate Professor at the University of Utah specializing in life-course reproductive epidemiology. Her research examines how gynecologic disorders, pregnancy complications, and cardiometabolic and psychosocial factors shape women’s long-term risks, including cardiovascular disease and dementia.
Methodologically, she leverages large, linked administrative datasets with nested research cohorts, including the Utah Population Database, to conduct retrospective cohort studies spanning more than 80 years.
